Today I want to share with you how to take care of your skin in the winter and what treatments you should be doing.
I am not a dermatologist and if you have any serious skin problems that’s whose advise you should be following; but if you are just looking to take good care of your skin and improve it, without having to see a doctor, this is the way to go.
We all know that grooming is so important and skin care is a major part of that. Just meditate a little on the fact that you only have this one body and one face for as long as you are alive, so you want to really take care of it.
Prevention and consistent care is the best thing you can do. And next to that, there are products and treatments that really help too.
I am gonna share with you what I do for my skin in the winter. In the winter your skin changes, it may be dry and flaking or you may even develop other problems like eczema (your skin is inflamed), so here are my tips to help you survive the winter.
Men’s Winter Skincare Basics
1- You should continue to wash your face twice per day. The only difference here is that you should use a cleanser that is not too harsh on the skin.
Gels are usually stronger and anything that says “for oily skin” will be strong. If indeed your skin is oily even in the winter then go for it, but for the rest of us a cleanser for sensitive skin is better for the winter.
If you use the gel or another stronger cleanser what may happen is that your skin will start to peel, I personally don’t like that.
My favorite cleansers for the winter:
FRESH SOY FACE CLEANSER – this works for all skin types and it’s VERY VERY good.
SKINCEUTICALS GENTLE MILD CREAM CLEANSER FOR SENSITIVE SKIN – Skinceuticals is a brand to always keep in mind. I found this brand at my dermatologist’s office.
You won’t find it in regular stores, its mainly in doctor’s offices but you can buy it on Amazon. All their products are great and it’s medical grade.
2- Toners – You can continue to use it if your skin is acne prone or you just like to use it. Toners can dry up the skin a little bit so if you want to skip it in the winter go ahead. I personally just skip in the winter, so I am not going to recommend anything.
3- Moisturize more!
The biggest change in the winter is that you should moisturize more to keep your skin looking good instead of dry and flaking.
In the summer I use a pretty light moisturizer by Jack Black, but in the winter I use something heavier. Make sure your moisturizer has sun protection in it. My current moisturizer is by Origins (see below).
It’s thick and a little heavier but your skin absorbs it all in minutes; trust me and don’t let the consistency scare you.

Oils are also a good option for hydrating in the winter but I don’t like how it feels on the skin. Argan oil is very popular right now. I actually use hair products with Argan Oil.
Bedtime Skin Care in the Winter
Before you go to bed wash your face and use a deep moisturizing cream that is good for dry skin and is also an anti aging cream.
My favorite right now is by Sisleyum, it’s expensive but worth every penny. For me, my night cream is where I spend most of my money when it comes to skincare.
During the night is when your skin replenishes itself, so having a high quality product on your face is essential and you should also have another night cream specific for your eyes. The skin around the eye is thinner and even more fragile. I currently use an eye cream by the great Tom Ford.
Get your beauty sleep! Not kidding guys. Getting 7-8 hours of sleep every night is key to staying young and having good skin.

Morning Skincare in the Winter
In the morning before you apply your moisturizer you can also use a morning serum/oil with Vitamin C. Vitamin C protects your skin from the effects of aging; it’s a potent antioxidant that can help rejuvenate aged and photodamaged skin. I have used an oil with vitamin C by SkinCeuticals for many years.

During the summer your skin is already exposed to the sun constantly so you have to avoid treatments like peels and stronger facials that might leave your skin even more exposed. In the winter those treatments become an option.
This may seem a little contradictory because I was just talking about not wanting dry skin and when you do treatments like peels your skin is dry and it will flake but you end up with a whole new skin on your face, nice right?
If you are one of those men who don’t take care of your skin on a daily basis, I highly encourage you to at least get a facial once a month or every other month. It won’t fix everything but will help a lot.
I get a facial every month. I get different facials depending on my skin needs; those needs change constantly.
Also make sure to go see an esthetician who has good reviews (I check Yelp or ask my girl to refer someone).

Hydrating facials are great because just as the word says it hydrates your skin. This is great for the winter when your skin is super dry. Make sure to ask your esthetician to do extractions and get rid of those black heads
This is by far my favorite one! Microdermabrasion is a facial that uses a machine with tiny crystals that exfoliates and removes the superficial layer of dry, dead skin cells. It works great to just give your skin a make over and clean it up. I have acne prone skin and lots of blackhead and this removes everything.
You could do this treatment any time of the year but my esthetician does the microdermabrasion and then finishes up with a glycolic acid mask to help with the acne and large pores, because of the mask she will only do it n the winter. I swear by this combo, once you try it you will want this every month. Your skin will look very nice and clean.
Microdermabrasion at Home
You can do microdermabrasion at home, obviously it won’t be as good as the one done by a professional. I have never done it, but what I have done is use products that mimic the treatment. I use a microdermabrasion exfoliator and it works great. I use it once or twice per month (this can also be used any time of the year). This is what I use:
Chemical peels are definitely recommended for winter only, unless you want to do it in the summer and stay totally out of the sun until your skin recovers (still not a good idea).
Some of the benefits of a chemical peel include:
- Reduce fine lines
- Treat wrinkles caused by sun damage and aging
- Improve the appearance of mild scars
- Treats acne
- Reduce age spots and freckles
- Improve the look and feel of skin
So you can see why I love it. You can treat so many things with one treatment type. You do need more then one session, usually you do 3 to 6 sessions spaced out through fall and winter.
I love this treatment but have to say its a little painful and you need to schedule when you have 2 or 3 days off. The best description I can give you is that it feels like a sunburn. You get this treatment done at a spa or a medical office.
At a medical office the doctor can give you a much stronger peel then an esthetician can at a spa. I have had peels at a spa and at a medical office and the ones at the spa are cheaper and were strong enough for me.
Each session varies from $100 to $200 depending where you live.
If you decide to get the peel, make sure that after its done, you stay out of the sun, wear sunscreen and preferably a hat (even in the winter).
Your skin will be sensitive and exposed. The results are worth it all!
Other Important Tips for the Winter (and for life in general):
- Use an aftershave cream that has moisturizer in it and less alcohol. Also try to shave in the shower if possible.
- Stop touching your face, your hands have lots of germs.
- Avoid tanning beds.
- Continue to drink water just like you do in the summer. You need the hydration.
- Eat healthy, good skincare starts in the inside. You can’t eat junk all the day and then wonder why you have acne.
- Sleep 7-8 hours/night.
- Stay active and exercise daily.
- Love yourself just as you are today. Strive to always improve in everything. Seek excellence (body, mind and soul).
