Baseball, basketball, football, soccer, even cricket. Most men fanatically follow at least one sport, and many of us follow all of them with gusto!
Come rain or shine, you’ll find sports fans sitting in the stands and rooting for their favourite teams. On the days that they can’t get tickets they often multiple and visit their favourite sports bar to watch the game together, usually wearing their own version of their team’s kit.
But how can you wear a replica sports kit and look stylish? Is there any way of wearing a football shirt and still showing off your fashion credentials?
Here are our top tips for wearing your team’s colours and supporting your favourite sports teams, whilst still looking chic and fashion-forward:
Bring a Baseball Cap
One of the easiest ways to add a sporty feel to any outfit, and showcase your commitment to your team, is to add an appropriate accessory.
Soccer fans often like to show their support for their team by wearing their club’s scarf. Football fans wear a replica of their team’s jersey. Baseball fans are big fans of baseball caps. In fact, if you’re heading to a baseball game then this is the one piece of kit you definitely need!
Wearing a baseball cap featuring your team’s logo is one of the easiest ways to support your team without having to make any dramatic changes to your usual style. Baseball caps have been in vogue for decades, first appearing alongside the rise of baseball culture in the 1950s and 1960s, and are surprisingly easy to wear.
The best way to wear a baseball cap with style is to avoid pairing it with oversized sportswear. There is nothing stylish about a baseball cap and baggy tracksuit combo! Why not follow David Beckham’s lead and pair yours with a slim fitting tee and your favourite jeans? This is the perfect way to show off defined muscle tone.
Want something a little more fashion-forward to ensure you stand out for all of the right reasons? We love the simplicity of pairing a baseball cap with monochrome, so why not pair yours with a pair of chinos and a simple black leather or denim jacket.
The baseball cap you choose should support your team: either pick one from your club’s official merchandise outlet or, if you prefer something a little more subtle, choose a hat from your favourite brand in your team’s colours.

Take Inspiration From the Runway
Sportswear has been inspiring designers and regularly strutting down the runway for the past couple of seasons. This year, many European designers took this nod to sportswear a step further, sending their models down the runway in a range of high end knitted soccer scarves.
The soccer terrace provided inspiration for the runway shows from some of the edgier designers (and some of my favourites) such as Comme des Garçons, Gosha Rubchinskiy and Y/Project.
Away from the runway, other street style brands, such as Supreme, Stussy, and London’s Palace have all created their own versions of the football scarf, moving it up away from something that is only worn on the terraces and elevating straight into high fashion territory.
So how should you wear your favourite team’s colours? Can you really make a football scarf look like a piece of high fashion? We believe that you can!
The key is to use your scarf to add a pop of colour to a neutral or tonal outfit, allowing it to be the focus of the outfit. Whilst the other pieces you wear may fade into the background, their fit is essential here. Your jacket should fit perfectly on the shoulders, your jeans should be slim and skim closely across your hips.
We recommend you play with proportion to create a stand-out outfit: your long line scarf will compliment a long line trench coat perfectly. Alternatively, you could exaggerate its length by pairing it with a cropped denim or bigger jacket.
To really emphasise the 1980s feel that so often accompanies a return to traditional football nostalgia, why not wear a pair of ankle-grazing jeans or chinos paired with a bright white or red pair of sports socks to further allow the proportions of your outfit to take centre stage.
Here are some of the best high-end designer faux-football scarves currently on the market if you want to dip into the trend without really understanding soccer:
Choosing the scarf of a real premier league team? Buyers beware: this isn’t a trend we recommend you fake! In Europe, particularly, soccer is approached with religious fervour. Many men have a deeper relationship with their team than they have ever had with a real human.
As Bill Shankley once famously said: “Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I assure you, it’s much more serious than that.” So if you’re going to start wearing a football scarf with a trench coat and your favourite drainpipe jeans, make sure you know your stuff. Pick a team you actually support and be prepared to justify your decision to other football fans: it’s all part of the fun of the game!
Steal Celebrity Style
If you’re still looking for inspiration on what to put together then look to your favourite celebrities. We always have major envy when we see what our favourite A-listers wear courtside, and many of these low key looks are surprisingly easy to replicate.
The key here is to achieve a look that says ‘I didn’t try too hard but I still look cool’ and no one does that better than John Legend. A hooded lifestyle sweater paired with his favourite jeans is his go-to outfit for almost every sporting event (and he goes to a lot!)
John’s look reminds us that simplicity is key: a black or grey marl hooded sweater is seasonless and will feel soft, warm, and comfortable. If you want to inject a fashion edge then look for unusual details (such as pockets, metallic fastenings, or patches and panels in unexpected fabrics) How can you possibly lose?
When it comes to choosing the right shoes, pick sneakers rather than leather shoes or boots, particularly if you are sitting in courtside seats, or anywhere else that attention could be drawn to your footwear. Wearing sneakers is the perfect way to nod to the sport you love and will inject a cool urban-inspired feel to your outfit.
If your sports fandom takes you outdoors in all weathers then you’ll need rugged, all-weather shoes. We suggest you leave your sneakers behind and invest in a pair of chunky boots, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still have fashion in mind. No shoe is more simultaneously fashion-forward and practical than the Dr Marten boot.
If you’re wearing them to stamp across a muddy sports pitch then your feet will stay warm and dry, but your boots will also maintain their shape, colour and overall quality no matter what you put them through.
Robust and timeless with air-cushioned soles and a retro punk power feel, these boots are the epitome of cool. There isn’t a look these boots won’t compliment: they’re the perfect shoes for sports fans!
The Eight Eye books are my personal favourites, and they really do go with everything. You can find them in a wide range of colours, and even patterns if you want something truly eye-catching. Here are some of our favourites:
Although looking fashionable is important (fashion is, after all, life) the key to looking chic without drawing attention to yourself for trying too hard is to ensure that you are comfortable.
That means ensuring that your outfit is weather appropriate. Layering is key here! Wearing thermal layers, or a fine knit polo neck sweater, under your sports jersey is a great way to show it off without the cumbersome weight of a coat or jacket. This isn’t the time for breaking in new shoes or wearing your favourite suit. Leave the formal pieces at home and opt for shoes you know you can stand in for hours, and slimline accessories that make your life easier, not harder. Nothing looks more stylish than a man who is comfortable, both in his own clothes and in his own skin.
Casualwear is king, so choose some of your favourite sports luxe pieces and show off your style credentials by wearing this tricky trend with panache.
Pick Perfect Jeans
When you’re heading to a game party where everyone will be wearing the same jersey, the jeans you choose to wear it with will have a big impact on your overall look and will be one of the main points of difference between you and all the other attendees.
Choose them wisely to help you stand out!
There’s no need to team your sports jersey with a pair of sports tracks or baggy pants; after all, you’re going to watch a game you’re not playing in it! That means that if you’re committed to wearing your fandom on your sleeve, then the pants you choose to wear will be essential for upping your style credentials.
Most men’s sports jerseys tend to be oversized. Therefore if you choose to wear your team’s jersey then it’s important to create contrast with your outfit by pairing it with a fitted casual pant; for most guys, that means skinny jeans!
If you’re not a fan of a tight-fitting skinny then look for a jean with a straight or tapered leg that is narrower at the ankle than it is at the hip.
There are so many premium denim brands that, when it comes to choosing the one that works best for you, you’ll be spoiled for choice.
In recent years, Lee Jeans have really upped their game, creating a laid-back and no-nonsense feel in deliciously dark shades. If you prefer your denim to have a distressed edge then look to brands such as Diesel or Seven for All Mankind.
And if it’s truly premium high-end denim that you want then try Coach, Nautica, G Star Raw, and even Marc Jacobs, who has a surprising knack for creating wonderfully wearable denim.
If you’re looking for great fitting jeans on a more modest budget then look to H&M, whose tapered skinnies have a gentle stretch to ensure that they are comfortable whilst fitting like a second skin. For a more relaxed fit choose Gap, whose denim is surprisingly thick and has a very premium feel for a relatively low price.
Choose Premium Accessories
As the famous saying goes, the devil is in the details. And that is more than true when it comes to choosing an outfit for a hot sporting event. The accessories you wear will say the most about you.
If you’re wearing nothing more than a sports jersey and a pair of jeans then you’ll need to add something to your outfit to ensure it stands apart as a fashion statement in its own right. And the best way to do this is to add a premium accessory.
Think about a chunky metal faced watch with a thick leather strap, add a gold bangle or an oversized gold signet ring, or throw on a pair of high-end designer sunglasses. From a practical point of view, a buttery soft leather satchel or an oversized leather backpack (Rick Owens makes some great ones) will give you somewhere to store all of your essential supplies for your day out, as well as nodding to your fashion credentials.
When the rest of your outfit is simple, your accessories will make a massive impact. They have the potential to imply to everyone around you what kind of man you are: people always notice accessories. The quality of your shoes, watch, and other leather goods will immediately send a message about your style status. Make sure it’s the right one.
Here are some of our favourite leather backpacks, perfect for adding a touch of practical elegance to your outfit for that big sporting day out:
Every guy has at least one sports jersey in their closet, and working out how to wear them with style is certainly not always easy. After all, there is nothing more generic than the guy in the sports jersey and slouchy, unflattering jeans: you’ll find at least one of him in every sports bar in the country.
You’re better than that. You have style, grace, and the ability to put together outfits that turn heads. Supporting your favourite sports team shouldn’t prevent you from looking chic and well put together.
The key is to think carefully about the pieces you choose. Limit yourself to wearing just one piece of sports memorabilia at a time. Wearing a baseball jersey and a baseball hat at the same time won’t make you look like a bigger fan; it will just make you look chronically uncool.
Once you’ve chosen the sports piece that will form the basis of your outfit, ensure that the other pieces you choose are either tonal in order to compliment it, or neutral to help your colours pop.
It is possible to support your favourite sports team and look chic and fashion forward at the same time! Get it right, and you’ll be turning heads as you head through the turnstiles, and for all of the right reasons.
