Once upon a time, the choices for men’s jewelry were pretty limited but, thankfully, this is no longer the case. The world of male jewelry has expanded, hit the mainstream and, now, the possibilities are almost endless.
There are no rules where modern male jewelry is concerned: the pieces you choose should reflect your personality and be true to who you are. This is the season to allow your sensationalist, oversized pieces to shine.
If you want to give your latest look a luxury touch then adding a piece of statement jewelry is the perfect solution. Here are five jewelry trends that every man should know about for 2018:
Transform Your Outfit With a Talisman
Whilst the understated jewelry trend has been around for decades, many men are using 2018 as an opportunity to override this passion for the simple and the demure by wearing big, bold, oversized talismans hung dramatically around their necks.
It doesn’t matter whether you prefer a gold or silver chain this year, what matters is that the necklace you choose makes a statement. The talisman you choose should be a conversation starter and reflect your personality in some way.
We love the historically-inspired talisman style necklaces from our Marcos De Andrade collection, which are perfect if you have a passion for history, global travel, or simply want a necklace that is a conversation starter, and that will make you look deep and meaningful!
Skulls, charms, and native animals are all also popular themes to explore if you’re looking to add a new necklace to your armoury. We love the smart casual way that Aaron Paul nails this trend, choosing to add a key and a dog tag to his chain: both guaranteed to get people talking!
This look is sophisticated, simple and easy to wear because Paul doesn’t choose to overload with accessories. By keeping his outfit in one simple shade (everyone’s favourite combination of black and grey) he allows his gold jewelry to really pop. Oversized sunglasses add extra cool.
You can choose a relatively clean look by just wearing one oversized statement necklace or, if you really want to stand out from the crowd, you could choose to wear two or three talisman’s layered together.
Piled on jewelry is a massive trend for men for 2018. This is something that we saw at runway shows all over the globe, but particularly in New York, London and Paris.
This is certainly a look that requires bravery and personality to pull off; wearing a pile of necklaces in one outfit is not a look for the fainthearted! Look to flamboyant personalities, such as Johnny Depp, for inspiration on how to pull this look off. It’s a look that is bohemian, exaggerated, and designed to attract attention.
If you’ve never experimented with male jewelry before then there is no better place to start than with a necklace. It’s almost impossible to get wearing this wrong, and nothing compliments the modern man’s classic mix of a simple tee and tailoring better.
The right necklace will draw the eye down your body, lending attending to defined pecs and abs, and drawing attention away from beer guts that you would rather hide. No matter what your body shape, this is the one piece of jewelry designed to be perfect for every man’s frame!
Choose Mini Hoop Earrings
Earrings for men have been in vogue for decades, but if you are a habitual earring wearer hoping to keep up with the latest trends then this season you should be abandoning your simple gold or urban-inspired diamond studs in favour of a simple gold hoop.
Take inspiration from your favourite pirates, but in a much more simplified and refined way. Miniature hoops in shades of silver, bronze and gold should be the order of the day here.
If you’re looking for a celebrity to take inspiration from then look to Zayn Malik, who has replaced his the double studs in his left ear with a stud and a hoop to nod to this newest trend.
Fashionistas can choose to wear a single hoop or a combination of two hoops: one in each ear. It doesn’t matter as long as the hoops that you choose are small, slim, and discrete! Unlike so many of this season’s hottest jewelry trends, this one is about simplicity and understatement.
Want to try the trend but don’t have your ears pierced? Whatever you do, don’t do it yourself! Visit your local ear piercing parlour (these are often combined with tattoo parlours) and always think safety and sterility first.
There are two ways in which your ears can be pierced: by hand using a long, hollowed out, canula-style needle. Or automatically, using an ear piercing gun. This is a loud, spring loaded piece of equipment that will shoot an earring through your ear very quickly.
Whilst piercing guns have been very popular in recent years because they are fast and easy to operate, more and more people are returning to traditional, manual piercing methods. That is because these are less traumatic to the body, and require more skill to apply.
Getting your ears pierced is a great way to show off your style credentials, and will ensure that you can wear at least one piece of jewelry every day, no matter how formal the occasion.
Why not take inspiration from Zayn, and other celebrities like Johnny Depp, Lenny Kravitz and Will Smith by stacking up more than one earring in the same ear to create a cool, rock ‘n’ roll effect?
Tackle the Beaded Bracelets
Wearing a stack of statement leather bracelets has long been considered a staple fashion trend for the cool, the laidback and the musical. However, this season’s passion for beaded bracelets brings this long-established trend up a notch, and takes it from grunge to high-fashion.
A leather cord wrapped around your wrist is the ultimate sign of rock (ours was so popular that it has temporarily sold out) but leather simply isn’t as durable, as easy to wear, or as simple to clean and maintain as highly polished, high end beads. This is the trend for 2018.
So what should you look for in a beaded bracelet? We love sophisticated black Onyx beads, which add a rockstar edge despite being high end and luxurious. For a classic black look, onyx looks great paired with titanium.
If you prefer something a little more vibrant and decadent then look for onyx paired with bright, eye-catching gold. For a more classic and timeless look, you could even try a solid metallic look in either gold or silver, just like Jay Z has below:
Really want to stand out from the crowd? Beaded bracelets come in all the colours of the rainbow, so the only real limit here is your imagination. Avoid anything too bright or sickly saccharine, however, unless you want to look cheap. Or like your arm has been attacked by a 12-year-old girl!
The bracelet is the toned arm muscle’s best friend. It is the perfect way to draw attention to your arm definition and will look particularly effective if you also have a tattoo or two to show off, leaving you looking like a rebel (but preferably one with a cause).
Wearing jewelry exceptionally well is one of the things the punkers and rockstars of the 1980s got right, and this is particularly true of wearing bracelets. These are the guys that took wrist adornments and inverted them from feminine glamour to a symbol of masculine confidence.
Don’t be afraid to stack your bracelets, and mix and match different colours and styles together. This will create beautiful texture and tone, adding richness and depth to your look.
If you’re looking for some celebrity inspiration here, therefore, then look to the favourite music stars of your childhood: Billy Idol, George Micheal, and Siouxsie Sioux all nailed a wonderfully androgynous vibe, and will all show you how it’s done!
The Return of the 90s Choker
The stand-out jewellery trend of the 90s (for both men and women) was the choker. Now, more than 20 years later, the trend is back! And whilst we weren’t quite sure about it at first, it’s really starting to grow on us.
The beauty of the choker trend is that it’s incredibly versatile. Chokers made of ribbon, velvet, strands of gold and even conch shells appeared on the runway for 2018, and this is a trend perfect for wearing on the beach or on vacation in the summer.
It doesn’t matter what kind of choker you choose to wear, what matters is that you wear it properly. The choker should fit around your neck snugly: anything too loose will move when you do, and will look ill-fitting and sloppy.
If you’re muscular and have a relatively thick neck then finding a choker that fits properly off the shelf isn’t as easy as you might think: many highstreet chokers tend to be designed with the slender-necked man in mind.
Does the struggle sound real? Don’t worry! The good news is that you can create choker or your own from almost anything. Even a piece of string wrapped around your neck makes a passable choker (something we were all doing to impress the ladies when the OC first hit our screens).
One of the best things about the modern choker is that it is a relatively cheap jewelry trend, and one of the very few that you can DIY at home without looking scruffy and inferior.
That means that if you’ve already invested in a more long-term, less faddy piece of jewelry (such as a beautiful ring or necklace you can wear every day) then you can still get on board with the choker trend and it won’t have to cost you more than a few pennies.
So, how do you create the perfect choker at home? Simple! Head down to your local haberdashery store (most department stores have a haberdasher inside) and look for the perfect material to construct your choker from. A slim black velvet ribbon or length of dressmakers chain would be perfect for this.
If you want to embellish your choker then you can do this by threaded any buttons, beads or charms you have onto this length. However, to keep things simple but effective, I love the look of a minimalist, unadorned choker.
Then simply tie your ribbon or rope around your neck, tying it in a knot at the rear (leave the bows to the ladies) If you have any excess length, you may wish to ask a friend to help you trim this.
Then you’re ready to go: nailing one of this season’s hottest male jewelry trends for less than a dollar or two!
Stand Out in a Signet Ring
The final men’s jewelry trend to explore in 2018 (and one of my favourites) is the statement signet ring. A signet ring is a ring with a letter or symbol carved into it: traditionally these were initials or a family crest.
Once upon a time, the signet ring was the sign of nobility: only the very wealthy owned one. During a time when many men were illiterate, many years ago, the signet ring was used a rudimentary writing instrument: it was used as a seal of authenticity, and many historically important documents were signed using one.
Modern signet rings have moved beyond this traditional iconography and can now be used to represent almost anything: your favourite sports team, animal, your nation’s flag, the initials of your loved one. The possibilities are endless.
If animals are your passion then you will love the Marcos De Andrades Athena Noctura Owl signet ring which features a hand-carved Athenian owl ring with truly exquisite detailing on the feathers.
Does the idea of wearing a ring still strike you as feminine? 2018 is the time to realise that times have changed. Now is the time for men to experiment with jewelry, invert tradition, and express themselves beyond simply the clothes that they wear. The accessories you wear (including the rings) will make your outfit complete.
Many men are now choosing to wear, and embrace wearing, engagement rings as a symbol of commitment to their betrothed. The signet ring is the perfect choice for this, because it is bold, stylish, and makes a statement that is sure to attract attention.
Yves Saint Laurent once said that whilst “fashion fades, style is eternal.” And there is no better way to inject a little style into even the most every day of outfits than with a well-chosen piece of jewelry.
Men’s jewelry is now just as popular as its female counterparts, and there are nearly limitless options available to you. Male jewelry ranges in price from a couple of dollars to thousands, but our advice is to choose just one or two pieces and spend as much as you can afford, rather than have a box full of cheap pieces.
The quality of the jewelry you wear says a lot about you: people will immediately notice, and give more respect to, a man wearing a Rolex compared to a guy in a cheap plastic watch. This same rule applies to your jewelry, so pick the finest quality you can afford and show off your attention to details.
2018’s hottest jewelry trends are all about being bold with the jewelry choices you make: standing out from the crowd in something that makes a statement and is ultimately stylish but doesn’t dominate your outfit.
This season’s most important pieces are the beaded bracelet and the statement talisman necklace. Invest in these pieces now and you’ll wear them all year long.
Let 2018 be the year that you introduce jewelry to your wardrobe, and you’ll really shine!
