There are some men who have a sense of style that simply shouldn’t work on paper, but they still manage to look amazing in every outfit they wear. Drake is one of those men.
He very rarely wears a suit, and his laid-back dress sense is decidedly and consistently casual. This is a man that got the urban sports-luxe memo and decided to run with it! And people seem to love that about him.
When Drake wears a new statement piece it sells out almost immediately. The green silk jacket that he wore in his Hotline Bling video sold out without two days.
Drake’s style of casual dressing is an offbeat (and relate-able) way of showing off his wealth and power: he doesn’t need to wear smart chinos or abandon his sneakers to get into the hottest clubs. His talent and reputation mean he’s getting in no matter what he’s wearing!
So how can you steal his style and dress like Drake? Here are some of our top tips:
Be Bold With Your Jacket Choice
One of the things that sets Drake apart from other baggy pant wearing rappers is the wide range of statement-making jackets he chooses. Drake doesn’t just choose one statement jacket style and stick with it: he jumps from leather jackets to bomber jackets, pea coat to puffa.
Ensuring that you have the right jacket for every occasion, and that your jacket makes a big impact, is one of the most essential parts of replicating the Drake look. Your jacket will be a huge part of your outfit so this should be where you focus most of your fashion efforts.
For more casual occasions, Drake tends to favor the varsity or bomber jacket and has a huge selection in a range of colors and styles. Drake also has a great layering game: he isn’t afraid to wear his jacket with hooded tops, shirts and tees and even sweatpants to create his own distinctive look.
If you don’t already have a bomber jacket in your wardrobe then you are going to need to get your hands on one of this season’s most essential and fashion-forward pieces sooner rather than later.
Here are some of our favorite Drake-inspired bomber jackets to help you make a perfect choice:
OVO You Didn’t!
Have you ever noticed that Drake seems to have an obsession with owls? He wears a wide range of identical looking owl hooded tops and tees on a regular basis! The reason? The owl is the logo of OVO (October’s Very Own) which is the brand Drake created and co-owns.
It makes sense then that if you want to dress like Drake you should consider picking up a piece of two from his incredibly popular collection. Drake isn’t the only musician promoting his brand: Kanye, Lil Wayne, and Justin Bieber are all also big fans of OVO. It’s fast becoming a rapper’s favourite.
With the hooded tops starting from $138 each, if you’re not a fan of owls (or on spending so much money on sportswear) then you could also consider this identical, and equally fashion-forward, hooded top, which is from our own Royal Fashionist collection and available for around $40. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: the sports luxe trend isn’t going anywhere. So having a hooded top or two in your armory is a sensible fashion decision that we encourage every man to make.
Top tip: If you want a versatile hoodie that you can wear with almost anything then choose one that is set on a black background. This will look great with both black and blue jeans, making it one of the most practical pieces in your wardrobe.
Pink to Make the Girls Wink
A lot of men worry about wearing pink, expressing infantile concerns that it may make them look feminine. The fact is that real men wear pink, and girls know it! There is something incredibly attractive about a man that is confident enough to wear any color he pleases.
Drake often chooses to wear a soft pastel or blush pink which both compliments his skin tone and looks great paired with all shades of denim.
If you’re still not sure about adding pink into your wardrobe then start with a relatively small piece (in terms of its size and the amount of financial investment involved) by choosing a pink tee:
You can minimize the visual impact or your new pink tee by wearing it under either a bomber jacket (Drake’s jacket style of choice) or for a look that is more preppy and wearable you could simply wear your tee underneath your favorite denim shirt. Button it up to the chest so that only the collar and neckline of your tee is revealed.
Pink isn’t a color to be afraid of though. Drake doesn’t just flirt with wearing pink, he commits to it fully and uses it to inject a sense of vibrancy and fun into his wardrobe. Wearing pink is an easy way to replicate the Drake look.
Ditch the Skinny Jeans
Like all rappers, Drake does not wear skinny jeans.
No rapper (in the history of rappers) has chosen to encase their legs in a pair of tube-like pants and Drake is certainly no exception. So if you want to replicate his look it’s important to ditch the skinny jeans and opt for the relaxed fit or straight fit jeans instead.
Relaxed fit jeans are surprisingly easy to wear because, unlike their trickier and skinnier cousins, they suit almost any body shape.
If the idea of wearing a loose and slouchy jean which covers over the tops of your sneakers seems like a step backwards (and it certainly is a look that was most fashionable in the late ’90s and early 2000s) then you could always take inspiration from the fashionista shown above and add a turn up to your wider legged jeans instead?
Although not strictly a look that Drake would try, this is a great way to inject some new season style into your outfit and turn what is fundamentally a classic urban look into something that is more exciting and trend-led.
This is a look that can be achieved using your existing straight legged jeans, so you can experiment by turning them up to different levels and move your hem line until you find the length that suits you best.
You’ll be amazed at how changing the style of your jeans can redefine your whole look: the shape of your trousers will often immediately identify which ‘tribe’ you belong to, and the wider and more slouchy your jeans, the more casual they are perceived to be.
Hit the Track
The matching two-piece track suit is an outfit that has a terrible reputation: this isn’t something that most men will own or incorporate into their everyday wardrobe. It’s a look that it incredibly hard to pull off, but Drake manages it with aplomb.
The key to wearing a two-piece tracksuit with style in a way that looks youthful and modern is to ensure that neither piece is too loose and slouchy: your top should show off any hint of muscle definition in your arms. Your pants should be slim at the hip and at the ankle.
Look for somethings slim fitting and aerodynamic; a good rule of thumb is that if it fits tightly enough that you could actually run in it should you come across a track then it’s the perfect shape to choose!
If you’ve never worn a tracksuit before then there is no better time to try than now. The fash-packs commitment to the athleisure trend means that these once no-go garments are popping up everywhere. You’ll even find certain high profile celebrities and fashionistas wearing their tracksuit to the club (something that would have been unimaginable five years ago!)
Here are some of our favorite high-end tracksuits to help you pull off Drake’s style just as well as he does:
If you’re not sure you can manage the two-piece tracksuit without looking like you’re on your way back from the gym or you’re a convict on the run then don’t worry: wear the pieces separately and team each casual garment with something more formal to create your own signature style.
After all, the most important thing about taking inspiration from someone else’s style, particularly someone whose style is as distinctive as Drakes, is to make it your own. The goal is to look like a guy with great taste that reminds people a little of Drakes (but is still uniquely you) not to start a new career as a Drake impersonator!
What is an outfit without a great pair of shoes? Drake is sponsored by Jordan Brand, so it stands to reason that he spends an awful lot of time with Jordan shoes on his feet, and these sporty shoes are part of what influences his whole look. After all, you can’t wear a sporty tracksuit without a sporty pair of kicks.
When he isn’t wearing Jordans (because a man as stylish as Drake can’t possibly wear the same shoes all the time) he likes to wear other urban favorites, such as his beloved tan Timberland boots.
Timberlands are a great winter equivalent to sneakers, designed to grip to the snow and keep your feet warm in bad weather. Given he hails from Canada, this is sure to be something Drake knows a lot about!
If you want to make a pair of Timberland boots your go-to winter or rough weather shoes then here are some of our favorite offerings from the brand;
Whether he’s in his favorite boots or his clean white kicks one thing is for sure: Drake’s shoes are always low key, clean cut, and perfect for pairing with almost any outfit.
Finally, you can’t talk about Drake’s distinctive look without mentioning his hair and his facial hair. Whilst they may get shorter or longer, depending on his mood (and no doubt the time between his salon appointments) Drake’s signature hair and facial hair style hardly change.
When it is at its shortest, Drake’s hair features a fade on the sides with an incredibly close buzz cut and his signature line up at the hairline. As it grows out he works with the natural texture of his hair, which is tightly curled and afro in style.
More often than not, Drake’s hair sits somewhere in the middle of these two lengths and is generally very short at the sides with a little more volume at the top. What really draws the eye though is the incredible precision of the cut: you could measure the lines with a ruler and not a hair would be out of place!
This signature hair look is incredibly easy to create and wonderfully low maintenance, but what makes it particularly iconic is that is his paired with his equally precise beard. Drake is rarely seen without facial hair, although he does look dapper when he opts to remove much of it in favor of some designer stubble instead.
To recreate Drake’s signature beard, opt for a fairly full beard to the chin, cheeks and upper lip, and ensure they are all kept at the same length. Keep the cheeks free from hair, and ensure the lines separating the hair from the skin are as clean and precise as possible.
If you have a rounded face or a ‘baby face’ then growing a Drake-style beard may be the perfect choice for you. It’s the perfect way to hide a multitude of sins, and you can use the hair to sculpt the face, completely redefining its shape.
Beards are great for disguising double chins, slimming off chubby cheeks, or even adding volume and definition to narrow faces. And the best thing is, if you don’t like the way your newly shaped beard looks, it’s very easy to shave it off and start again!
We love Drake’s low key sense of style. It is the perfect style to replicate if you’re looking to inject something new and exciting into your dressed down weekend look.
It is also a surprisingly simple look to capture. Simply throw on a pair of straight leg jeans, a loose fitting tee (with or without a logo, depending on your personal tastes) and a silky bomber jacket. Choose a jacket that is bold and exciting: one with badges, contrasting sleeves and embroidery will be ideal. Finish your look with your favorite kicks and you’re ready to go!
Because Drake has become such a style icon, the cachet of his OVO brand has also only grown in recent months. If you really want to channel Drake (and show that you’re a fan of his work at the same time) then investing in a piece of the brand is a great way to go.
Whichever option you choose to help you channel the power of Drake, be sure to really through yourself into it. The key to Drake’s fashion success is his confidence in everything he wears: he believes he looks good, so he does! Own your outfit, and you’ll always look great.
