It’s that time of the year again, autumn. And as I am sitting here writing my blog and responding to emails from my home computer (I work from home), I can’t help but to think about the comfort of a soft robe and cozy slippers.
So why not find the best robes and slippers out there to share with you guys? You can lounge at home in style and still be very comfortable. Every gentleman must have a proper set of pajamas, robe and slippers so you can have a lazy day at home without losing your swag.
A Little History
Robes, also called dressing gowns, were already used back in the 17th century. In those days it was referred to as “Persian gowns” and “Indian gowns” because of the garments’ Eastern origins and oriental, kimono-style design.
By the 1860s robes already had the design that we see today, with the shawl collar, button-less, wrap design and big pockets. The length also varied as we see today from mid-thigh to as far down as the ankles.
In the 19th century, lounge robes were worn twice per day: during a gentleman’s morning as he gets ready for the day, and in the evening after work.
Today, I believe most of us still wear robes in the morning and evening or sometimes through out the day if you work from home or just have a day off.
As for slippers, its use in the West was first recorded in the 1400s. By the mid-16th century wealthiest men wore slippers made of soft Leather, Silk or Velvet along with their sumptuous robes often made from the same materials.
One fact that I found very interesting in my research was that in some cultures, such as Japan, it is a social obligation to remove shoes and wear slippers when entering a home (your own or someone else’s).
This is done to show respect for the home. It’s funny because in my house I always practice this.
I never wear my regular outside shoes inside the house, more so because I don’t want to bring in all the dirt and germs from outside, but I found this Japanese tradition very sensible.
Best Brand: UGGs
I love the UGGs campaign “Do Nothing”. It’s so perfect and represents perfectly what the brand stands for.And in the spirit of “Do Nothing” I cant help but share one of my latest purchases, my UGG Slipper.
I went to the UGG’s event in San Francisco, CA a couple months ago and I ended up buying the classic tan slipper and let me tell you it was the best investment. It’s so incredibly comfortable.
I can’t say it’s beautiful…because it really isn’t but that’s beside the point because the comfort outweighs the lack of style.
Leather slippers are definitely more stylish and elegant and are usually worn with your silk robe. Here are my favorites:
Now Moving on to Robes
There are many different styles of robes made from different materials such as silk, cotton, velvet, microfiber etc.
For example, if you live in Miami where it is hot the entire year, but most likely you have your AC on all day, you may want a linen robe because it’s not too warm (you can go outside with it) and will protect you from the AC.
If you are in New York or California like me you may want to buy two robes one made from silk for the summer and one made from velvet or microfiber for the winter. So really think about your home environment before you buy.
Another thing to consider is the look you are going for. Do you want to be super stylish? Or you want to look good but mainly have something that you can be comfortable in all day? Regardless of what your scenario is I am going to give you only options that provide you with style and comfort, so don’t worry!
The Silk Robe
The silk robe is best worn with leather slippers. It is more luxurious and sophisticated and will definitely give you that old Hollywood look.
The Linen Robe
I am not really a fan of this fabric for robes. If you live somewhere really hot this may be a good choice for you though.
The Cotton Robe
The Velvet Robe
My Next Purchase:
How you dress can really affect how you feel, your mood and even how others see you. So even if you are home alone it is still important to look the part for your own self. The external is only reflection of how you feel inside so show that confidence!
