Yeah, my friend, sometimes even picking the perfect accessory to go with a suit can be a (very) hard task. And I don’t mean the tie. Instead, I’m talking about the watch. Believe me, the pick of this item, which can many times be hidden under your shirt, makes the whole difference. Now you will no longer have to worry about it.
I’ve met with two experts in this issue so that I could get some tips on choosing the perfect watch to wear with a suit. According to Renato Costa, a specialist in style and history of fashion, our choice says much about the elegance the item brings up as one of the the main men’s accessory for this kind of dress.
Costa chose five models that, the way he sees it, are great investments. Here they are:
Model: Classic – a classic men’s watch, 43mm case, stainless steel bracelet, analog movement, blue or black dial.
Model: Altiplano Watch – 40mm white gold case, white dial, automatic movement, black leather strap.
“All these watches feature one thing in common: their case is sleek and their display, classic and clear. We’re talking about pieces that are mostly hand-made, featuring sleek straps too, including the leather ones. This goes along the lines with their bezel design”, he tells me.
Thicker bezels and too many subdials and hands do not match the classic features of a suit. “It’s imperative that you’re careful when you choose your watch. It shouldn’t be too sporty or draw too much attention to your wrist”, Costa alerts.
Plus, it’s interesting to think that the watch can be an extension of your suit and shirt. And remember, it must be well adjusted to your wrist. Its case should never feature a bezel larger than your wrist. Likewise, it shouldn’t be too small either, which could look like a ladies’ watch.
The black leather straps look perfect with darker suits, and gold or white gold bezels bring sophistication to the piece, no matter if it’s got white, black or blue dial. “Suits and shirts featuring cufflinks go well with a watch of the same metal as the cufflinks”, the specialist advises.
A style that can’t go wrong
The five models presented go really well with contemporary models of suit that are slim fit and slight break pants in order to highlight the shoes. Besides, a shorter slim-fit blazer, a light-colored shirt and a slim tie will just add to it.
“This outfit is just perfect to go with a sleek case watch and leather straps. If you wear a vest with the suit, you can also throw on a sleek case watch, but maybe with a steel mesh bracelet this time, following the bezel line. It will be the cherry on top”, Costa adds.
And how about the colors?
The specialist recommends darker suits, like black, dark gray and navy blue. Now, linen, natural cotton or even jeans casual models that do not require a tie can go with straps in more informal colors, like blue, green or maybe gray. “However, the sleek case is still essential here, as well as a clear designs of subdials and hands. And a white dial”, he wraps up.
Of course I sought a second opinion on the topic. So I talked to Freddy Rabbat, an expert in the luxury market and president of Tag Heuer in Brazil.
He set aside a few models of Tag Heuer and told me about how they go with suits. Take a look:
Its strap, in black leather, conveys the sophistication of those knowledgeable men who can appreciate the history of watches, as well as its perfect size, bringing discretion and drawing attention to it at the same time.
“I suggest wearing it with 3-button suits to build up the style of the 60s, which is what this model proposes. I still believe that the best colors are those between dark gray and navy blue, including medium blue” Rabbat points out.
According to the expert, this watch is the classic among the classics. “Features crocodile skin strap, pink gold markers, the best you can get in a dress watch”, he explains.
A great match for this watch will be the regular fit suits because of their straight lines. Only shades of gray here, including pinstripe.
This modern chronograph is a piece you can wear to any business meeting, especially if you choose a deep v-neck modern suit, which will match the bold design of the case. Wondering about the color? From light to dark shades of gray and navy blue.
“Sophistication and sportiness in one only piece, expressing modernness of those wearing it. Despite its 45mm case, it brings out shirts with cufflinks and double cuffs”, recommends the expert in the luxury market.
To him, contemporary slim fit suits matching the innovation of the watch are the best picks. As for the colors, all of them will look fantastic, be it day or night. Contemporary suit is the last word in style.
A classic watch immortalized by its brand, which you can wear whenever a regular suit is required, especially those comfortable classic fitting ones featuring two buttons.
“Any color will do, as long as you pick dark brown shoes and belt. However, if I were to select one color, I’d go with navy blue”, he adds.
“This is a watch that can fit any shirt cuff because of its 39mm case. A small chronograph that looks like it’s been passed on through generations. I suggest wearing it with a modern, slim-fit two-button suit jacket, which conveys all the lightness the watch features. Variety of colors: “several shades of gray”, says Rabbat.
