One of things I love most about men’s grooming is perfumes. You need to appreciate all the work and sensibility that takes to produce a perfume.
A perfumier most of the times acquire their base notes by traveling and experimenting different fragrances from a variety of raw materials like fruit, leaves, flowers, etc.
But what makes a perfume so unique and luxurious? The rarity of the raw materials and the purity of the oils will make the perfume’s value.
For example OUD (Oudh), which is one of my favorite raw materials, and not surprisingly one of the most expensive ones. It is often sold for $7.000 dollars per pound.
Just so you can understand why Oud is so expensive, let me show you some info about it.
Oud comes from the Southeast Asian agar (aquilaria) tree wood. It is said that only 2% of those wild agar trees produce it.
“When the wood becomes infected with a particular type of mold, the tree reacts by producing a dark, scented resin, which is often called “liquid gold.” “Oud” is used to refer to both the resin-saturated wood (the agarwood) as well as the oil distilled from it.” source:fortune.com
To create a luxury perfume, there are “timeless” working hours of mixing different scents and trying to find which one of those will turn to a unique fragrance.
Those perfumes are also made of the most pure concentration of oils termed Eau de Parfum and Extrait. Their oil concentration usually reach more than 10% to as high as 20%. Different from an Eau de Toilett that has only 5-8% of those oils.
That means, you will feel more of the fragrance for longer because of the richness of those essences.
I made a list of my favorite ones, starting with my favorite that I current use myself. (website’s product description)
OUD satin mood, the latest introduction to our fabric inspired fragrance collection OUD mood, conveys the desire to bring a shimmering Orient to life. It is inspired by oud wood, a natural material that is amongst the rarest and most expensive in perfumery.
OUD satin mood Transported by the finesse of the violet accord, oud wood from Laos curls on contact with the rose essence from Bulgaria and the rose absolute from Turkey before softening when it encounters the rich vanilla-scented amber accord.
